Meet Sam the Hockey Player

“Sam was a born hockey player.”

That is what his dad has always told him, and Sam believes it.

Sam the Hockey Player is a series that follows Sam Parker through life. He is accompanied by his two closest friends – Jill, a girl his same age, and Gordie, his stuffed bear.

Sam is typically of the same age as the intended reading audience for each book. The topics, tone, language and art of each book is tailored to that reading age group.

Children

Sam is a toddler, discovering hockey (and life). 

These books are all about the wonder and excitement that is in the world for a young child to discover, including hockey.

Written for the pre-reader, with the understanding that a loved one will be reading the book to the child. These books are illustrated by Drew Spilker.

Mite

Sam is around 6 years old,  and learning to play hockey as a Mite.

These books continue the journey of discovery, and begin to weave in some important, positive life lessons that are universal – positive attitude, teamwork, doing the right thing (and figuring out what that is).

Written for the early reader, ages 5-8.

Pee Wee

Sam is 11-12, playing in the Pee Wee division.

As a pre-teen in middle school, Sam encounters many of the common issues that boys and girls face at this age. The realities of life encroach on his childhood (things like bullying, divorce, puberty), and Sam tries to make that transition while adhering to positive values in life — including tenacity, kindness, and resilience — that are the foundation of his character.

Written approximately for the 9-12 year old reader.

Young Adult

Sam is 15-17, playing at the Junior level.

Sam tries to follow his dream of playing professional hockey while traversing those difficult teenage years. Peer pressure, uncertainty about the future, difficult decisions, new experiences, and learning how to navigate the successes and setbacks of life are the challenges Sam faces.

Written approximately for the 14-17 year old reader, and adults. Contains more mature themes, language, and situations. (Titles and format TBA).

Adult

Sam is grown up. His journey through hockey and life continues as he tries to balance his dream of playing professional hockey with the realities of life, love, and responsibility. His human, emotional growth into true adulthood is the focus of this novel (title TBA).

Adult themes and situations. Written for the adult reader, or mature young adult.
