Short Stories

I’ve written dozens of short stories, published in magazines and anthologies.  Most of them are crime fiction (written as Frank Zafiro), including one of the few straight up hockey short stories.

Vancouver Dreams is the purest hockey story I ever wrote. It appeared in the 2004 issue of SNR magazine under my Zafiro pseudonym. Looking back, I should have stuck with my real name for this one, as it has no elements of crime fiction in it. Instead, it is about a former college hockey goaltender who gets a shot at playing in the NHL during a lockout.

You can get it for free right here.

Five For Fighting and a Murder Misconduct
appeared in Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine (July/August 2006). It is way more of a mystery than a hockey story, but there is a bunch of hockey contained in these pages, so I’ve included it. Ex-cop Stefan Kopriva is asked to help out an aging hockey prospect with a delicate problem. Things go poorly.

You can’t get this magazine issue anymore, but this story is part of my River City short story collection, No Good Deed. Buy the anthology here:

Titus, My Brother

Roman Britain, 60 CE.

Appius and Titus, Roman soldiers, march toward Camulodunum to put down Boudicca’s revolt. But the night before, Titus has some a pressing philosophical question for his brother-in-arms. It is one that Appius initially answers easily, but the more they discuss the question, the more he struggles for a true answer.

“Why do we fight?”

Before he can fully examine this compelling question, Appius and his cohort are thrust into battle against the fierce Iceni in a pitched battle for control of southern Britain.

You can get “Titus, My Brother” in print, digital, or audio.

“Titus, My Brother” was my entry into the military fiction anthology, The Odds Are Against Us. You can get the anthology on Amazon, and see more about it on my Frank Zafiro page.
